High Court permits disclosure: Aryeh Amidror was the Gaza Division's intelligence officer

For almost three years, he was just one letter. Lieutenant Colonel A. The Gaza Division's intelligence officer on 7 October 2023, the man who was supposed to see what was coming. On 1 October 2026, the letter became a name.
The High Court of Justice permitted publication of the fact that Lieutenant Colonel Aryeh Amidror was the Gaza Division's intelligence officer on the day of the massacre, the Jerusalem Post reported. It is important to say at the outset what that means and what it does not: the permission concerns publishing his identity. It is not a ruling on criminal responsibility, and this article makes no determination of such responsibility.
The Post noted another detail that attracts attention: Amidror is the son of Yaakov Amidror, the former national security adviser who appeared on television throughout the war. That is a biographical detail. It does not explain an operational decision or say anything about what his father knew or did not know on the night of 6 to 7 October.
Jericho Wall and the warnings
Now to the difficult part. According to the Post, Amidror was considered to have firmly rejected the possibility that Hamas would carry out the raid scenario known as "Jericho Wall." That scenario materialized on the morning of the attack. Note the word "considered": this is the report's assessment, not a quotation from a signed document.
The Post adds that a female noncommissioned officer from Unit 8200, identified in the report only as V., tried to warn him. But the scope of the warning, when it was delivered and what was done with it were not detailed in the quoted paragraph. A warning that went unheeded is a claim about a reporting chain, and without the documents themselves it is difficult to know how much time passed between the warning and the decision, or who else saw it.
From an initial to a name: the path to publication
The disclosure did not come out of nowhere. In September, the military confirmed that the head of the Manpower Directorate, Major General Dado Bar Kalifa, had discharged Amidror from service, while reports still referred to him as Lieutenant Colonel A. Several months earlier, on 23 November 2025, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir had determined that several officers bore command responsibility for the failures of the 7 October massacre and that command measures should be taken against them. Because of his role as the division's senior intelligence officer, a process was opened to consider whether to discharge him.
But discharge from service is not a conviction. Command responsibility, as the chief of staff described it, is not a criminal proceeding either. This article contains no information about criminal proceedings opened against Amidror.
Why was the name withheld for so long? Because it was subject to a publication ban, and the military and media used the initial A. The High Court lifted the ban on the name. It did not publish call logs or intelligence documents. The public now knows who held the position. It has still not seen the investigation file.
One name in a long chain
Once there is finally a name, there is an understandable temptation to attach the entire failure to it. But the chain of command is long. Above the division's intelligence officer were the division commander, Southern Command, the Military Intelligence Directorate and the General Staff. The report does not allocate percentages of blame, and anyone writing that publication of the name closes the investigation goes further than the court's ruling.
Nor does the decision reveal the names of the other officers to whom the chief of staff referred generally in November 2025. They remain initials. In the same way, the noncommissioned officer V. remains an initial because her name has not been published.
What is now known
What can be said with confidence? That the High Court allowed publication of the name of the Gaza Division's intelligence officer on 7 October 2023. That the military discharged him by decision of the head of the Manpower Directorate, after the chief of staff assigned command responsibility to officers in November 2025. And that, according to the Jerusalem Post, he was considered to have rejected the "Jericho Wall" scenario.
What remains unknown? Almost everything else: the documents, the times, the full chain of decisions. The initial has become a name. The full story is still waiting.
