Ahead of 7 October, Katz orders action on warnings of attacks in Gaza

Before the anniversary arrived, the military was ordered to heighten preparations. On Tuesday, 6 October 2026, Defense Minister Israel Katz demanded readiness for the possibility that Hamas would try to attack soldiers in the Gaza Strip the following day. According to his office, information about the organization's intentions prompted the directive, rather than a report of an event already occurring.

The demand goes beyond additional vigilance. The statement carried by Srugim also describes using force in response to warnings to prevent the harm itself. Alongside this instruction, Katz threatened a response affecting Hamas and Gaza's population if soldiers were harmed. These are distinct parts of the announcement: a military task and a warning conditional on a future event.

Prevention within continuing operations

Katz's office described preparations intended to address severe scenarios too. The minister seeks action on information indicating danger rather than merely waiting for developments on the ground. In the directive's terms, the point of intervention comes before an attack, not only in response.

These actions are supposed to supplement the military's existing work in Gaza. The statement does not suspend current missions for the readiness task; it demands an additional effort directed at a particular date. It did not specify which forces would receive extra duties or how they would be integrated.

For the soldiers covered by the warning, the stated purpose is protection against attempts to harm them while serving in the field. Readers should distinguish publication of the directive from a description of its implementation. The decision to prepare was published; detailed activity by every unit is not part of the public announcement.

The threatened response is not directed only at Hamas

In discussing the potential consequences of harm to soldiers, the minister's office explicitly included Gaza's population alongside Hamas. Katz warned of a heavy price beyond all proportion. He did not present a list of measures, strike targets or a framework explaining what that response would look like.

This is therefore more than another formulation of the order to protect troops. The instruction concerns military work against threats, while the threatened response broadens the circle of those who might pay the price. The reference to residents is part of the minister's remarks, not a description of an action already approved or carried out.

The message was also tied to a visit to the Kissufim outpost attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to the office, Katz and the Southern Command chief accompanied him, and the warning was made clear during the visit. Naming the location explains the declaration's context but does not identify Kissufim as a target of the plan the minister warned about.

Pursuing past attackers and fearing the next attack

The new directive followed a different Katz message. According to a Srugim report of 5 October, the minister said that of 6,000 terrorists who entered Israel during the October 2023 attack, 4,000 had been killed and 2,000 remained. He described the continuing pursuit of those involved as a mission Netanyahu and he had assigned to the security agencies. The same report said Katz also named dismantling Hamas and demilitarizing Gaza as objectives, without announcing their achievement.

The Jerusalem Post also reported the figures that day, citing an Israeli official who attributed them to a cabinet presentation by Military Intelligence chief Shlomi Binder. According to the newspaper, the meeting took place on the evening of 4 October. These are figures Israeli officials supplied about participants in that attack, not the number or identity of people involved in the new warning.

The distinction matters: the pursuit concerns people Israel says already participated in an attack, while current preparations aim to prevent another. Katz's office did not state that the same people were planning the possible anniversary operation. Nor is the number in the earlier statement an estimate of the threat's size on 7 October 2026.

The warning concerns soldiers; operational details were not published

The public message contains three central details: Hamas is the organization assigned the intentions, soldiers in Gaza are the possible target, and the anniversary is the concerning time window. Beyond that, no operatives' names, weapon types or planned attack locations were provided. The plan's maturity was not explained either.

This distinguishes a warning from a report of a thwarted attack. The latter should describe an attempt prevented or an operation stopped; here, the statement demands preparations for a possible danger. It does not establish how many attempts are expected, whether they are coordinated or whether Hamas has already ordered them carried out.

The wording's boundaries matter for civilians too. The publication concerns forces operating in Gaza and includes no new instruction to Israeli residents about school, work or movement. It should not, by itself, become an announcement of community closures or changes to public routines. Those are separate decisions absent from this statement.

What is needed to know how the directive was implemented

Wednesday, 7 October 2026 marks three years since the Hamas‑led attack on Israel. Katz's announced preparations concern that day, but no particular expected starting time was attached. Nor was a date announced for publishing results or ending heightened readiness.

Further military or Defense Ministry reports could clarify whether the information led to action, whether an attempted attack was identified and whether preparations changed. Each detail describes a different stage: receiving information, addressing it and an outcome on the ground. They do not become interchangeable merely because the warned‑about date approaches.

At the stage described by the minister's announcement, the objective is to prevent information from becoming harm to soldiers. Anniversary monitoring will concern reported protective and preventive measures, alongside any further decisions published. The warning has left Katz's office; its implementation can be described through actions reported by the authorized bodies.
