Northern Trains to Halt on Two October Weekends: Stations, Alternatives and Service Resumption

Train services north of Haifa Hof HaCarmel will stop on two separate dates in October for construction of the Nofit light rail and additional track works. According to Moovit's 5 October update, based on an Israel Railways announcement, stations will close on Friday, 9 October, and again on Friday, 16 October. Free shuttles will operate at selected stations, and bus routes will receive additional service.
Service resumes at different times on the two weekends. After the first closure, normal service is scheduled to return on Sunday, 11 October. After the second, it is scheduled for Saturday evening, 17 October. Anyone planning to travel north on Friday evening or Saturday night must therefore check the particular date rather than assume the same arrangement applies to both weekends.
Fourteen stations temporarily leave the route
The station list includes Haifa Bat Galim, Haifa Center HaShmona, Merkazit HaMifratz, Hutzot HaMifratz, Kiryat Haim and Kiryat Motzkin. Farther north it includes Acre and Nahariya; on the Karmiel branch, Ahihud and Karmiel. In the valley, it includes Yokneam‑Kfar Yehoshua, Migdal HaEmek‑Kfar Baruch, Afula‑Rafael Eitan and Beit She'an‑David Levy.
Haifa Hof HaCarmel is not among the closed stations in this update. That distinction matters for travelers planning to reach the area by train from central Israel and continue north. It does not mean every northern destination is connected to Hof HaCarmel in the same way, or that reaching the station completes the planning. Check the remaining leg to your destination as well.
The station list shows that the change is not limited to Nahariya or Haifa. It also affects travelers from the valleys and users of the Karmiel branch. If your normal route includes a transfer at Merkazit HaMifratz, for example, do not assume the same chain of trains will operate during the closure simply because your departure station is far from the works.
What is known about alternatives
The announcement describes free shuttles at selected stations and additional regular public transport service. Two routes named explicitly are Egged's route 262 from Karmiel to Haifa and Nativ's route 271 from Nahariya to Haifa via Acre. Distinguish the dedicated shuttles from the regular bus routes receiving extra service.
The free shuttle announcement does not make every bus journey in the area free. Anyone using a regular route should check its travel conditions. Nor does the word "additional service" provide a departure time: before relying on it for a train connection or pickup, check the specific journey in the updated timetable.
Anyone departing from a station outside those two bus routes should search for an alternative using their origin and destination addresses. Do not assume the Karmiel or Nahariya route directly serves Afula, Beit She'an or every station in the Krayot. A good route starts with the passenger's needs, not necessarily the railway station normally used.
The first weekend needs particular attention
In the consolidated update, service following Friday, 9 October, returns to normal on Sunday, 11 October. Anyone planning a return on Saturday evening, 10 October, should therefore not rely on the normal Saturday‑night train timetable. Check alternatives specifically for that date, including ways to reach the destination without the closed rail segment.
On the second weekend, resumption is planned for Saturday evening, 17 October. Here, too, the announcement gives no exact time for every train and station. Resuming service that evening does not mean your train leaves immediately after Shabbat ends. The itinerary must show the departure time and connection to the next leg.
This is not an announcement of an uninterrupted eight‑day closure between the two windows. Save the dates separately so you do not mistakenly abandon a midweek trip or assume service has already resumed during the first weekend. When sharing the information with relatives, include the corresponding resumption date beside each closure.
The Nofit works are being carried out by Cross Israel Highway, alongside additional Israel Railways track infrastructure works.
Planning a journey with transfers and shuttles
Start with your required arrival time and work backward: when must you reach the onward connection, how long does the transfer take and where is the pickup point? The consolidated announcement does not fully detail shuttle platforms, frequency or accessibility. Clarify these with Israel Railways or the operator before departure, according to your chosen route.
Passengers with wheelchairs, strollers or heavy equipment should also check the physical transfer between the platform and shuttle. Do not simply ask whether there is a bus: establish where it picks up and what boarding requires. If relatives are helping with pickup, make sure everyone is using the same station name and meeting point.
Check the return journey separately. A convenient morning solution does not guarantee a similar evening connection, especially when regular routes and dedicated shuttles are combined. Save the alternative's details and the latest journey that works for you, and avoid relying on an unverified tight connection.
Read the details of northern train changes in the consolidated update, then check the timetable for your date again before traveling. Good preparation means a complete route from home to destination, with the two closure windows and correct resumption times. This lets you choose an alternative beforehand instead of reaching a station that has no service that day.
