Digital shekel: a progress report, but no currency

The message looks entirely official: a bank symbol, familiar colors and a simple request. "Register early for the digital shekel wallet and transfer your money before everyone else." There is just one small problem. The digital shekel does not exist. Yet.

The Bank of Israel is researching a digital shekel. It has not decided to issue one. An initial system design was published in early March 2025. A progress report followed in May 2026. The 2026 work plan includes detailed design, an issuance roadmap, technological experiments and a recommendation to the governor toward year‑end. All appear on the Bank of Israel website. This is research and planning, not a wallet you can download.

A recommendation is not a launch

Anyone announcing that the digital shekel already replaces cash is ahead of the decision. A recommendation to the governor is not issuance. The end of 2026 is a target for a recommendation, not a launch date. Even a positive recommendation, if it comes, would require a separate decision and announcement.

What about the words "multipurpose system" in the design? That is a planning term. It does not mean every shop will be required to accept a digital shekel or that cash will disappear. Cash, bank transfers, cards and checks continue under existing rules.

The 2026 plan also includes technological experiments. But an internal experiment is not a public pilot and does not open registration.

Fertile ground for fraud

Here is the truly important part. Until issuance, a request to transfer money to a digital shekel wallet is not a bank service. Anyone receiving such a link should stop. The May 2026 report and March 2025 design are Bank of Israel documents, and neither contains a public wallet address.

A bank symbol on a screen is not authentication. Visit the bank website through your saved address, not a link. Do not give a bank login code in exchange for "early registration." If an invitation arrives for a "digital shekel experiment," check that it comes from the Bank of Israel spokesperson's office rather than a private brand. Do not deposit money in an experiment absent from the official page.

One more thing: a health fund, municipality or the Israel Electric Corporation will not ask you to pay in digital shekels. Such a demand is impersonation, not a pilot.

What about your salary?

This question returns repeatedly: will salaries arrive in digital shekels? The answer is simple: no. Employers continue transferring to ordinary accounts. There is no form choosing between regular and digital shekels because the latter simply has not been issued.

Business owners: leave the checkout alone

Business owners need change nothing because of the report. No terminal update, no new payment option in the menu, no change to the acquiring agreement. Payment processing, VAT and invoices remain tied to existing methods. If a customer asks to pay in digital shekels, the answer is that the payment method has not yet been issued.

If a system opens in the future, the announcement will come from the bank and regulator, not a mass message.

Where things stand in October

Here is the full picture in one line: initial design in March 2025, progress report in May 2026, work on a recommendation for late 2026, and no issuance. There is also no official early registration where you need to secure a place. Following the project page on the Bank of Israel website is entirely sufficient. There is no reason to open another wallet ahead of a decision not yet made.
